What is OpenVPN?

OpenVPN is an application to easily set up a virtual private network over an encrypted connection. It relies on a known SSL library (OpenSSL) that is being used by the major part of security-related servers on the internet. One of the advantages of OpenVPN is that it needs only a single TCP or UDP port for transmission.

OpenVPN is open source and licensed under the GPL 2. It's available for most platforms including Linux, Solaris, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Mac OS X, und Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

Why do I need a VPN ?

Virtual private networks are used for example by field staff (roadwarriors) to access the company's internal network services (file servers, mail servers, etc.) from everywhere around the world. Once connected, there is no difference to being physically plugged into the network.
